Prescription Policy

New Prairie Veterinary Service will only write prescriptions to be filled by pharmacies in the States of Indiana and Michigan; we will not prescribe through unlicensed pharmacies, including any internet pharmacies. We have established this policy to safeguard your pet, and to recognize the fact that we are legally responsible for ensuring that you receive only the correct, quality medication that we have prescribed for your pet.

Internet sites that sell drugs are largely unlicensed and unregulated by any state or federal agency. *Some have been prosecuted for selling counterfeit medications that are cheap medications or, worse, harmful to the person or animal taking them. Some sites buy cheap medications in third-world countries where quality control is poor, and repackage and resell them at a huge profit as licensed drugs from the United States, which they most certainly are not.

In establishing this policy, our goal is to make it as convenient, safe, and economical to obtain your pet's medication as we possibly can. If we prescribe a medication that is not available locally, we will find a source for you that will provide you with quality, reliable medications; if necessary, we will obtain the medication for you. If you require the convenience of having medications delivered to your home, we can provide that service, as well. Purchasing questionable or substandard medications is not the answer -you are risking your pet's health.

* The best-known Internet site for veterinary medications, PetMed Express, is located in Florida and is regulated by the laws of that state. Because of previous legal action against them, PetMed Express is prohibited from selling prescription medications to Florida residents (read the fine print on their web site). Unfortunately, since the laws stop at the state's borders, Florida cannot prohibit them from selling to other state's residents; and other states cannot easily regulate them because the corporation exists only in the State of Florida.
